FLUPSY
(Fluid Upweller System)
|
The FLUPSY is a controlled
environment used to raise oyster spat. It is not quite as exciting as a
fish hatchery, however there is a lot happening under the deck. The FLUPSY has
36-24"X24" tubs
that sit in the float. Each tub has UHMW (plastic) walls to reduce
fouling and
a fine mesh bottom to keep the spat in and the predators out.
The paddle wheel forces water up through
each tub 24/7 and maintains the young spat in a near suspended state.
With the nutrient rich seawater flowing through the spat 24/7 the young
oysters have
a rapid growth rate in this predator free environment.
Spat enters the FLUPSY at 3-5mm (approximately 1/8"-3/16"), depending on
the time of year and the nutrients in the water column the oyster spat
can reach a size of 20-25mm (1") in just a few months where they are
sold to the growout farmers in the field. The FLUPSY provides the
farmer with a healthy oyster that greatly reduces mortality as well as his
growout time which means he can get the oyster to market sooner and that
means more profit.

| The spat are washed and
sorted up to 4 times a month. This depends on water temperature and
the amount of plankton in the water. |
|
| Construction of the FLUPSY took
place in a local shop. Most of the labor was volunteered by
community members. The FLUPSYwas built in two halves and then
transported to the Naukati Bay water front for assembly. |
| The FLUPSY was assembled on
the Naukati Bay boat launch ramp. The foam floatation was
installed and the decking fastened to the assembly. |
| Once assembly was complete the FLUPSY
was floated free and moved to its finial location. |
