Naukati Bay Shellfish Nursery was established in 2004 with economic development grants from the USDA Forest Service and the State of Alaska. With the growing demand for Alaska Oysters raised in the pristine Alaskan waters, supplying the growout farmers with quality spat (small oysters) became a necessity. Taking that challenge was the Alaska community of Naukati Bay nestled on the northwest side of Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska 80 miles west of Ketchikan, Alaska.
Since its infancy, the Naukati Bay Shellfish Nursery has grown dramatically supplying over 4 million oysters a year to the Alaskan industry. Several new growout farmers have began operations in the Naukati Bay area and several more are coming onboard as a result of the Week End Warrior project started as a spinoff resulting from the success of the Naukati Bay Shellfish Nursery.
Oysters do not "Molt" or reproduce in the cold Alaska waters, therefore the "Spat" or seed which are actually tiny oysters that have just developed a shell from the larva state are purchased from commercial hatcheries. The spat, as small as 3mm (1/8"-3/16"), is raised on the Naukati Bay Shellfish Nursery "FLUPSY" to approximately 25mm (1") prior to being sold to the growout
farms. Raising the spat in the controlled environment of the nursery provides rapid growth in a healthy predator free environment thus reducing the growout operators spat mortality rate and allowing the operator to deliver his product to market sooner which increases his bottom line.
Naukati Bay Shellfish Nursery is currently working to develop a "Regional Shellfish Processing Facility" at Naukati Bay to aid the growout farms in getting their product to the market place in a consistent manor.
